More companies are
adopting .NET Architectures which continues to gain momentum in
the market place. The momentum is starting to outpace the skills
development for the relatively new technology. New opportunities
for .NET skills are emerging.
The demand for .NET
development skills is on the rise. In the last quarter we
have seen a 19% increase in overall IT positions.
Specifically the demand for .NET developers is up over 58% from
the previous year.
Now is an excellent
time to evaluate your current skills and future skills.
Many companies are looking at individuals with both Java and
Visual Basic skills and they are sending them to be trained in
on the .NET technologies. If the demand for individuals
with experience in the .NET technologies is high and the number
of people that have the expertise remains low - what will happen
to salaries? Obviously it is a sellers market and prices will go
up.
It
appears that many companies are committing resources to
evaluating .NET technologies and several have already stated
that .NET is the future platform of choice So, if you are a Java
developer should you consider making .NET training as one of
your career choices? The answer is yes. In conversations with a
local .NET trainer he stated that the transition from Java to
.NET is relatively easy by comparison to individuals with a
COBOL or C++ background.
While
the transition from Visual Basic to the .NET technologies is not
a snap it is a logical progression and many training courses
specifically address that transition.
Questions to ask yourself:
Are you happy with your current skills and career path?
Are you on new development projects or maintenance?
Are you comfortable with your career and see no need to make a change?
Are you receiving salary increases or opportunities to advance your career at your current employer?
Has your current employer announced a planned transition to .NET technologies?
Has your employer announced a training program for .NET technologies?
Is your employer posting positions for .NET developers on their career site?
If your employer is not paying for .NET training should I acquire training myself?
Answer all of these questions
yourself and then create a plan to resolve them. These
development environment transitions occur every 10 to 15
years. You may personally know of developers who did not
make the transition from mainframe based COBOL development
to client server development. Look at those individuals
career today. Many have been laid off or are in a permanent
state of code maintenance.
Opportunities for individuals
with .NET experience and training will continue to increase over
the next few quarters. The demand is on the rise with our
clients and now is a very good time for developers with the
desire to enhance their skills with .NET technologies.
